Ribbed Scallop Shell Studs

A scallop shell is a fan with a hinge, and everything good about it starts at the hinge. That is where we put the stone. The fan itself is cast in metal with nine raised ribs, polished along their tops and left satin between, the outer rim gently notched the way a real shell is. At the base, where the two small ears of the hinge meet, a cushion-cut lab-grown diamond sits in four prongs, its soft corners echoing the curve of the shell above it. No pearl, no pavé: one stone and a good shape. Worn, the fan opens upward and the diamond rests lowest on the lobe. Stones of 1 or 2 carats per ear, in 18K yellow, rose or white gold, PT950 platinum or S925 sterling silver. Each pair is cast and set to order in 10 working days.

Design
A small scallop fan in metal, nine raised ribs radiating from the hinge, their tops polished and the valleys between left satin, the outer edge gently notched. A single cushion-cut lab-grown diamond sits in four prongs at the hinge point, bottom centre, above a polished hinge plate with two small ears. On the ear the fan opens upward and the stone rests lowest on the lobe, held by a push-back post.

• 2 ct + 2 ct: about 13 mm high × 10 mm wide, roughly 6.5 mm deep
