The idea behind it is simple and rather beautiful. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond in every material sense, sharing the element, the crystal structure, the hardness and the way of handling light that define any diamond. What sets it apart is how and where it formed. This introduction moves through those ideas slowly, so that the next time you look into a stone, you know exactly what you are seeing.
A diamond is defined by its structure
Every diamond, wherever it forms, is made of a single element: atomic number six, the same element found in the soft gray graphite of a pencil. What turns that humble element into diamond is arrangement. In a diamond, each atom bonds tightly to four neighbors, and those bonds repeat in every direction to form a rigid, three-dimensional crystal lattice. Graphite holds the same atoms in loose, sliding sheets, which is why it leaves a mark on paper. Diamond locks them into a framework so strong that it ranks 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, the very top.
That arrangement is the definition. A stone with this composition and this lattice is a diamond. A stone that only resembles it, such as cubic zirconia, which is zirconium dioxide, or moissanite, which is silicon carbide, is a different material altogether.
Grown from a seed of diamond
A lab-grown diamond begins with a seed, a small, thin piece of existing diamond whose lattice serves as a template. Inside carefully controlled equipment, new atoms attach to that template and continue its pattern, so the crystal builds outward layer upon layer, much as a mined diamond once grew far underground.
Two established methods create those conditions. Chemical vapor deposition, known as CVD, uses a low-pressure chamber and a gas mixture energized until the atoms needed for diamond separate out and settle on the seed. High pressure, high temperature growth, known as HPHT, recreates the crushing pressure and intense heat found deep within the Earth. Both produce true diamond crystals, which are then cut and polished like any other rough diamond.
What stays exactly the same
Because the material is identical, the qualities people treasure in a diamond carry over completely.
- Hardness. At 10 on the Mohs scale, a lab-grown diamond resists scratching just as a mined diamond does, which is why it suits rings and pieces worn every day.
- Brilliance and fire. The way light bends on entering, reflects inside and returns to the eye belongs to the crystal, so a well-cut lab-grown diamond sparkles with the same character.
- Appearance. Placed side by side, a lab-grown and a mined diamond of similar quality cannot be told apart by the unaided eye; identifying origin takes specialist instruments.
- The language of quality. Cut, color, clarity and carat describe a lab-grown diamond exactly as they describe a mined one, and every stone has its own individual details.
Where the difference lies
The difference is origin. A mined diamond formed naturally beneath the surface over immense spans of time before being brought up and recovered. A lab-grown diamond is grown above ground rather than mined, so the stone itself does not require new mining. Both are genuine diamonds; each simply carries a different beginning.
That beginning should always be stated openly. A grown stone is described with clear words such as lab-grown or laboratory-grown, so you know which kind of diamond you are choosing. For many people, knowing where a stone came from becomes part of what makes it meaningful.
