Round
The round brilliant is the most familiar diamond shape. Its many facets are arranged to return as much light as possible, so it gives a bright, even sparkle from every angle. Round stones suit almost any setting, from a simple four-prong stud to a five-stone band, and they are the easiest shape to pair with other jewelry.

Oval
An oval keeps much of the brilliance of a round stone but stretches it into a longer outline. On a ring, that length runs along the finger and can make the hand look slimmer. For the same carat weight, an oval usually shows a larger top surface than a round stone.

Pear
The pear, or teardrop, combines a rounded end with a single point. It looks graceful as a pendant or drop earring, where the point naturally hangs downward, and distinctive on a ring, where it can be worn pointing toward the fingertip or the wrist.

Marquise
A marquise is long and narrow with a point at each end. Of all the classic shapes it tends to look the largest for its weight, because so much of the stone is spread along its length. It has a slightly vintage character and works well in asymmetric and stacked designs.

Princess
The princess cut is square with sharp corners and a lively, crisp sparkle. It gives a modern, geometric look. Because the corners are its most exposed points, princess stones are usually set with prongs or a setting that protects each corner.

Heart
A heart-shaped diamond is the most openly symbolic shape, which makes it a natural choice for gifts and pendants. The shape reads best in stones large enough for the two lobes and the point to be clearly defined.

Emerald, Asscher and cushion
These step-cut and softened-square shapes are less about scattered sparkle and more about clean planes of light. An emerald cut is rectangular with long, mirror-like facets, as in The Architect's Dream emerald cut ring. An Asscher cut is its square cousin, as in the Eternal Echo Asscher studs. A cushion cut has rounded corners and a soft, pillow-like outline, as in The Essence of You necklace.
Which shapes need a protective setting?
Three of these shapes come to a point, and a point is the thinnest part of any stone: pear, marquise and heart. In our designs those tips sit inside the setting — held by a prong that wraps the point, or by a bezel that runs around the girdle — so the vulnerable part is never the first thing to meet a door handle. Round, oval and cushion cuts have no point to protect, which is why they are the easiest shapes to wear on a ring you never take off.
Emerald and Asscher cuts raise a different question. Their long, straight facets show the inside of the stone clearly, so a well-cut emerald relies on proportion rather than sparkle to look alive.
