Why Diamonds Sparkle: Brilliance, Fire and Scintillation

Light enters, turns within, and returns as something more than light.

A diamond does not glow on its own. Everything you admire in its sparkle is borrowed light, gathered from the room, bent, reflected and sent back to the eye in a changed form. Jewelers describe that performance with three words: brilliance, fire and scintillation. Each has a simple physical explanation, and each depends on how the stone is cut and set. Because these effects belong to the crystal itself, a lab-grown diamond handles light exactly as a mined diamond of the same cut does. Here is what happens inside a diamond in the moment it catches your eye.

Brilliance: light that finds its way back

When light passes from air into diamond, it slows sharply and bends. Diamond's refractive index, about 2.42, is high among gemstones, and that has a striking consequence. Light traveling inside the stone that meets a facet at more than about 24 degrees from a line perpendicular to that facet cannot pass out. It reflects back inward instead, an effect called total internal reflection.

A well-cut diamond puts this to work. Light enters through the top, strikes the angled lower facets, reflects from one to another and leaves again through the top toward the viewer. That returned white light is brilliance, the bright, clear shine that makes a diamond seem lit from within.

Fire: white light unfolding into color

White light holds every color of the spectrum, and each color bends by a slightly different amount as it passes through a transparent material. This spreading is called dispersion. In a diamond, it separates light into flashes of red, orange, blue and violet as it leaves the stone, much as a prism does on a sunny windowsill.

Those colored flashes are known as fire. They show best under small, direct light sources, such as candlelight, spotlights or sunshine, and grow softer in diffuse, overcast light. In a diamond, fire appears as sparks of color woven through strong white brilliance rather than overwhelming it.

Scintillation: the dance of light and shadow

Scintillation is the sparkle of movement: the flashes that appear and vanish as the diamond, the light or your eye shifts. It also covers the pattern of bright and darker areas across the face of the stone, because contrast is what lets the bright flashes read clearly. A diamond with no darker areas at all would look flat; the gentle interplay is part of its life.

Scintillation depends on the number, size and arrangement of facets. A round brilliant, with its many small triangular and kite-shaped facets, produces a lively, finely broken sparkle. Step cuts such as the emerald cut, with long, parallel facets, create broader, slower flashes that are often likened to a hall of mirrors.

Why the cut decides so much

Everything above depends on facet angles. A round brilliant typically has 57 or 58 facets, arranged so that light entering the top is returned efficiently. If the lower half of the stone is too shallow, light meets the pavilion facets at an angle that lets it pass straight out of the bottom, leaving a washed-out area. If it is too deep, light escapes through the sides instead, and the center can look dark.

Shapes have their own light patterns too. Elongated brilliant shapes such as oval, pear and marquise can show a darker band across their middle, known as a bow-tie, which careful cutting keeps soft. This is why a precisely cut stone can outshine a larger one cut with less care.

Prong or bezel: how the setting frames the light

Most of the light that becomes sparkle enters a diamond through its top, so both classic settings let a well-cut stone shine. They simply frame it differently.

  • Prongs hold the diamond with slender metal claws, leaving most of the stone visible from the side. The look is airy, and the diamond seems to float. The Starlight Four-Prong Ring lifts its round brilliant in four prongs chosen to keep the light open.
