The legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl
Legend has it that the Weaver Girl was a celestial maiden who wove the clouds and colors of the sky. She came down to earth, where she met a kind and humble cowherd. They fell in love, married and lived happily, until the heavens discovered the match and called her back. In many tellings, the Queen Mother of the West drew a river of stars across the sky to keep the two apart.
Their sorrow moved the magpies. Once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh month, the birds gather to form a bridge across that river so the lovers can meet. Versions of the story differ from place to place, but its heart remains the same: a love so faithful that even the sky makes room for it.
Two stars on either side of the Milky Way
The legend is written in the night sky. The bright star Vega is traditionally identified with the Weaver Girl and Altair with the Cowherd, and the two shine on opposite sides of the Milky Way, known in Chinese as the Silver River. Qixi customs reflect this celestial setting. Traditionally, young women prayed to the Weaver Girl for skill in weaving and needlework, and offerings were set out beneath the open sky. In some places, rain on Qixi is said to be the tears of the lovers as they part.
