Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: Origin, Quality and IGI Reports

Two diamonds can look alike under the same light. The difference is where they began. A natural diamond forms through geological processes in the Earth; a lab-grown diamond is created in controlled conditions using methods such as HPHT or CVD. Both are diamonds with essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties, as GIA explains.

Can you tell them apart by eye?

Usually, no. Sparkle alone does not establish origin. Professional gemological laboratories use advanced testing to distinguish natural from laboratory-grown diamonds. A lab-grown diamond is not a diamond simulant such as cubic zirconia.

Does origin tell you which diamond is better?

No single origin guarantees a particular quality. Look at the individual diamond: its cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, often called the 4Cs. The shape, proportions and setting also change how the finished piece looks and feels. Compare the stone you will actually receive rather than assuming every natural or every lab-grown diamond is identical.

What does an IGI report tell you?

What shoppers often call an IGI “certificate” is a grading report. An IGI loose-diamond report identifies whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown and records its 4Cs and measurements. You can check a report number through IGI’s verification service. A report describes the stone examined; it is not a blanket grade for every stone in a collection or a valuation of the finished jewellery.

Aetheris provides an IGI grading report for an individual diamond of 1 ct or above. Before ordering, ask us to confirm the grade and report number for the exact stone you choose; report availability for smaller diamonds varies by stone and design.
