Short answer: cubic zirconia is glass-hard costume stone, not diamond. It is much softer, so it scratches and goes cloudy with daily wear, and it costs a fraction of either a lab-grown or a mined diamond.

Cubic zirconia has sparkled in jewelry boxes for decades, and it is easy to see why: it is bright, widely available and convincingly diamond-like at first sight. It is also often confused with diamond, including lab-grown diamond. The two are not the same, and the difference becomes clearest not on the first day, but after years of wear. A diamond and a simulant
Two words used in gemology make the distinction simple. A synthetic, or laboratory-created, gem has essentially the same chemistry and crystal structure as its natural counterpart. A simulant only imitates the appearance of another gem while being a different material.
A lab-grown diamond belongs to the first group. It is a crystal of a single element, atomic number six, in the diamond lattice, identical in structure to a mined diamond. Cubic zirconia belongs to the second. It can look similar across a room, but it is not diamond in any form, which is why it should never be sold as one.
What cubic zirconia is
Cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide, a compound of the metal zirconium and oxygen, formed into a cubic crystal. At room temperature, pure zirconium dioxide favors a different crystal arrangement, so small amounts of stabilizing oxides are added to hold the cubic structure in place. The cubic zirconia used in jewelry is manufactured, and it can be produced in large quantities and a wide range of colors.
Its optical properties come close enough to diamond's to create a convincing first impression, but they are not identical. Its refractive index, about 2.15 to 2.18, is lower than diamond's, so it returns somewhat less white brilliance, while its dispersion is higher, so it can show more colorful flashes.
Hardness and the years ahead
Here the two materials part most clearly. Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale; cubic zirconia ranks about 8 to 8.5. Both are hard compared with many gems, but the gap is larger than the numbers suggest, because the Mohs scale ranks which material scratches which rather than climbing in even steps. Diamond stands far above anything ranked just below it.
Over years of wear, the difference tends to appear on cubic zirconia in small ways:
- Softened facet edges. The crisp lines where facets meet can gradually round after repeated knocks and contact with harder objects, blurring the sharp play of light.
- Surface scuffs. Fine scratches can gather on the table, the large facet on top, gently dulling the face of the stone.
- Chips. Cubic zirconia is relatively brittle, so edges and points can chip more readily.
Almost nothing but another diamond will scratch a diamond, so its polish and facet edges can hold for generations with ordinary care. Other quiet clues
Weight is one. Cubic zirconia is much denser than diamond, roughly one and a half to one and three-quarter times as dense, so a cubic zirconia the same size as a diamond weighs noticeably more. For that reason, carat weight is not a fair way to compare the two; dimensions are.
Heat is another. Diamond conducts heat exceptionally well and cubic zirconia does not, which is why simple thermal testers can distinguish them.
